Informational Guide to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) - Non Official

Bangkok Airport Terminal

All the information featured on this page was compiled and written by David Enrich, a renowned expert in aviation and airport guides since 1999.

Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is Bangkok’s primary international gateway and one of the largest airports in Southeast Asia. Since opening in 2006, it has served as Thailand’s main long-haul hub, connecting Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania. Designed to accommodate high passenger volumes and future expansion, the airport plays a central role in regional aviation and international transit traffic.

The name Suvarnabhumi, meaning “Land of Gold,” reflects Thailand’s historic position in global trade routes.

Historical Background and Origins

Suvarnabhumi Airport officially opened on September 28, 2006, replacing Don Mueang as Bangkok’s principal international airport. The terminal was designed by architect Helmut Jahn and became known for its large steel-and-glass structure and one of the world’s longest free-span roofs at the time of inauguration.

Due to steady passenger growth, the airport later expanded with the addition of a Satellite Terminal (SAT-1), connected by an automated people mover system, significantly increasing handling capacity.

If you are transferring between international flights on separate tickets, allow extra time for immigration and baggage re-check procedures.

Terminal Structure and Layout

Suvarnabhumi operates primarily from a single, very large main passenger terminal, complemented by a satellite concourse.

Terminal Levels

Level Function
Level B Airport Rail Link station
Level 1 Public transport, buses, taxis
Level 2 Arrivals
Level 3 Restaurants and services
Level 4 Departures and check-in counters
Level 5 Airline offices and some lounges

The check-in area on Level 4 is particularly spacious, with long rows of airline counters organized by aisle letters.

Departure boards are located throughout Level 4. Confirm your check-in row before entering the queue to avoid unnecessary walking.

Concourse Areas and Zones

After security and passport control, passengers access multiple concourses (A–G) serving domestic and international flights.

  • Domestic flights are typically handled in Concourses A and B.
  • International flights use Concourses C through G.
  • The Satellite Terminal (SAT-1) is connected by an automated train system.

Walking distances can be considerable, especially to gates located at the far ends of concourses.

Allow at least 15–25 minutes to reach distant gates, particularly during peak travel hours.

VIP Lounges

Suvarnabhumi offers a wide selection of airline-operated and independent lounges.

Major airline lounges include:

  • Thai Airways Royal Silk Lounge
  • Emirates Lounge
  • Singapore Airlines SilverKris Lounge

In addition, several pay-per-use lounges are available for passengers without premium tickets.

Many lounges provide:

  • Buffet dining
  • Shower facilities
  • Quiet seating areas
  • Business workstations

Shower facilities are particularly useful before long-haul flights; availability may be limited during peak evening departures.

ATMs are distributed across all levels. Currency exchange counters operate in both arrivals and departures areas.

Exchange rates on the lower levels near public transport areas may be more competitive than those airside.

Showers are available inside select lounges and in some paid facilities within the departure area.

Family and Reduced Mobility Services

  • Family restrooms are clearly marked.
  • Some gate areas provide small play spaces.

Services for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PMR)

  • Wheelchair assistance is available upon request through airlines.
  • Elevators and accessible restrooms are located throughout the terminal.

Assistance should ideally be requested at least 48 hours prior to travel via your airline.

Security and Baggage Control

International passengers pass through passport control followed by centralized security screening.

Key regulations include:

  • Liquids limited to 100 ml per container in hand luggage.
  • Strict rules on power banks and lithium batteries.
  • Automatic checked baggage screening systems.

Remove laptops, tablets, and large electronics from your bag in advance to speed up the screening process.

Lost and Found

The Lost Property Office is located on Level 4. Passengers can report missing items in person or through official contact channels. Retaining your boarding pass and baggage tag will help speed up the process.

Check-in and Boarding Information

  • Check-in counters typically open three hours before international departures.
  • Online check-in is available for most airlines.
  • Boarding usually begins approximately 45 minutes before departure.

Gate assignments may change; always verify information on official departure screens.

Some gates are located far from central concourses; monitor boarding times carefully to avoid delays.
